Angerfish Mask
I became very interested in mask making recently and have loved the combination of painting and cardboard structure and paper mâché. During the construction of this mask I felt particularly drawn to sea life and sources of light in very dark places.
I made sketches while I was at work. I loved utilizing the natural cardboard divets to look like scales and organic texture.
Striped Polka Dot Top
Patchwork Embroidered Beast Skirt
Half-forgotten House
8x10
I made this piece while reflecting on childhood hometown nostalgia. It showcases the remembered and forgotten elements of a place once called home. There is a hesitance to revisit some aspects of this place, but a preserved love for the atmosphere and innocence of it.
Collage Stop Motion
Rock Paper Scissors Man
8x10
I made this piece for my father, and it is supposed to portray the many routes one can take. I like the idea of acknowledging that one is in control of the paths they can take, which is shown by the man displaying all three signals. He can go anywhere he'd like to.
King Ferdinand
8.5x11
I love my cat Ferdinand and drew him as royalty.
battle with self / surrender
Something that intrigues me is self criticism and the standards we hold ourselves to, compared to the standards we hold others to. This shows the easy surrender to the criticism of ourselves, especially when it's hard to realize how much you're holding yourself back.
"Venus on Ice"
8x10
I was inspired by the famous painting "Venus on the Half Shell", painted by Sandra Botticelli in the 1480's, portraying Venus, greek goddess of love and fertility, arriving to land in a shell. Venus is welcomed and worshipped for her beauty and stature, elegantly posed. My interpretation, "Venus on Ice", shows her sitting solemnly and vacantly with a cigarette, candid and unposed in a calm sea. I intend to raise the question of what happens when beauty goes unnoticed, or when it is not the top priority. My venus is noticed by none but the moon.
